Community Outreach

The YMCA of Greater Moncton is committed to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and related challenges through compassionate, community-based outreach. Our programs meet people where they are—offering immediate support, long-term solutions, and meaningful connections to housing, health services, and basic needs. Whether through street outreach, crisis response, or supportive housing, our goal is to walk alongside individuals on their path to stability and dignity.

ReConnect is a housing-focused outreach program designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability, including those living outdoors, in shelters, or couch surfing. Our team provides daily on-the-ground support in Moncton, offering essential items such as food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and harm reduction materials. We also assist with critical next steps—like helping individuals obtain identification, apply for income support, and navigate the housing system. ReConnect builds relationships over time, connecting people to long-term supports like healthcare, social services, and permanent housing.

How to access support: Weekly drop-in hours on Tuesdays at 473 St. George Street (10:00 AM–12:00 PM) and Thursdays at the Moncton Public Library (1:00–3:30 PM).

SUN Supportive Housing provides long-term, individualized support to individuals transitioning from homelessness to housing. Using a Housing First approach, the program focuses on placing individuals in permanent housing as quickly as possible—without preconditions. Once housed, participants receive ongoing support tailored to their needs, which may include move-in assistance, life skills coaching, budgeting, navigating tenant rights, and referrals to community services such as mental health, healthcare, or employment supports.

SUN Moncton empowers participants to maintain housing stability and improve their overall quality of life, with the flexibility to increase or decrease support based on their situation.

SUN also partners with Rising Tide, ensuring more members of our community have access to the safe, supportive housing they need to thrive.

Please note that SUN does not accept individual referrals, all individuals housed are selected through Greater Moncton’s Coordinated Access System.

The Downtown Ambassador program was launched in June 2016, initiated by Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc. (DMCI) in partnership with the City of Moncton and YMCA ReConnect. Through the initiative, two “Downtown Ambassadors” work to provide a variety of public safety, hospitality and goodwill services. YMCA ReConnect administers the program and its staff, whose overall goal is to make downtown Moncton a welcoming and inclusive place for those living, working and visiting. As part of their role, the workers provide outreach services to those experiencing homelessness and work with the business community. Although a more traditional summer program, the ambassadors have worked throughout Spring, Fall, and even the Winter months.

YMCA ReConnect Alternative Dispatch (YRAD) is a community-based crisis response initiative that provides real-time, on-demand outreach for non-emergency situations involving individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health crises, or substance use challenges.

Launched in July 2024 as a pilot project, YRAD was made possible through funding and support from the Codiac RCMP and the City of Moncton. The program serves as an alternative to police, by-law officers, or paramedic intervention, prioritizing de-escalation, harm reduction, and connection to community supports. The program helps individuals in distress access the right services while also providing support to businesses and community members navigating concerns related to visible homelessness.

YRAD operates 24/7, seven days a week, excluding statutory holidays, and serves the Greater Moncton area, including Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview. Staff respond to calls diverted from the Moncton city dispatch line and provide welfare checks, crisis de-escalation, referrals to housing and social services, and mediation between businesses and individuals.

Key Services of YRAD:

  • Crisis de-escalation and conflict mediation
  • Outreach and support for individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Assistance for businesses navigating social concerns
  • Harm reduction supply distribution and education
  • Housing and resource navigation
