From Peeling Carrots to Leading the Y: Zane Korytko’s  YMCA Journey

“Peeling Carrots.”

Although it may seem like an unusual memory, it’s the first thing that comes to mind for the CEO of the YMCA of Greater Moncton, Zane Korytko, when asked about his earliest memories of the Y.

“When I was five years old and living in Montreal, my mother became a member of the YMCA,” says Zane. “At that time, there was no daycare. So it was Mrs. Turley in the Y’s kitchen who took care of me. She had me peel carrots, which I suppose was my first volunteer task.”

After those days helping out in the kitchen, Zane took part in nearly every children’s program the Y had to offer. Over the years, he held almost every youth position available, including swim instructor and assistant day camp counselor — his first paid job. His sisters also worked at the YMCA, making it a true family connection.

In the late 1980s, Zane met Ana Berlie, a fellow Y enthusiast. The couple went on to have three daughters — all of whom worked for the organization as well, including at the YMCA of Greater Moncton, where Zane has served as CEO since 2006.

“I believe we all love the Y because it gives a sense of belonging and because its purpose is to help the community. It’s clear and simple,” Zane reflects. “I’m proud to be part of the Y. It truly feels like home here.”
