(Moncton, November 15, 2018) – The YMCA of Greater Moncton will host an open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, at École Le Sommet, 701 Ryan Rd., regarding the new YMCA community centre and recreational facility to be built in Moncton’s North End.
“This will be an informal event where residents can drop by to learn more about the project, view site drawings and chat with representatives of the YMCA, the City of Moncton and Acadian Construction, the company building the new centre,” said Zane Korytko, CEO of the local YMCA.
In July, representatives of the federal and provincial governments as well as the City of Moncton announced $14 million in joint funding for the construction of a new $17-million YMCA facility in the North End. The satellite Y will be built on land along a yet-to-be-constructed extension of Twin Oaks Drive. The facility is projected to open in the fall of 2020. (The downtown Y will continue to operate as usual. The north-end facility will complement features and services provided at the main Y. YMCA member access cards will be good at both Moncton locations.)
The federal and provincial governments are each contributing up to $4 million to the project while the city is providing $6 million. The YMCA of Greater Moncton will undertake a $3-million capital campaign towards the project.
More than a decade ago, a group of north-end citizens approached the city for a community centre in that area citing a lack of recreational and community services. The new Y will consist of a 35,000-square-foot community centre and recreational hub. It will include an interior splash area and playground, a gymnasium and fitness centre, an indoor track, as well as a multi-purpose space that will provide community support services and amenities.
