In the late 1960s, Saturday mornings at the Moncton YMCA—then on Highfield Street— were a ritual, says Kim Christie-Gallant.

“There was swimming, gym, crafts, and a hot dog and pop at the canteen,” says Kim, who now teaches finance at NBCC Moncton and serves as the Greater Moncton YMCA Board Chair. “The place was packed. It gave us a real sense of community.”

In her teens, Kim joined the Y’s Leader Corps, which helped youth develop life skills. Saturdays became a time to volunteer.

“Perhaps my proudest moment in those days was being recognized as Craft Leader of the Year,” she says, later posing for this photo with the award she has kept for decades.

After completing studies in Business Administration, Kim eventually left Moncton for work. Upon returning, she joined the new YMCA on War Veterans Avenue.

Today, swimming is Kim’s activity of choice at the Y—and volunteering.

“I’m proud to be Board Chair and enjoy working with a great group of Board Members and Y staff,” she says. “I’m happy to give back since the YMCA has contributed so much to the well-being of my mind, body and spirit!”
