POOL CLOSURE: The YMCA of Greater Moncton aquatic centre (all pools) will be closed for annual maintenance until 5:30 a.m. Monday, June 24. We apologize for any inconvenience.

It’s hard to imagine a couple more loyal to the YMCA than Betty and Stewart Hudson.

At 18, Betty, a nurse in training, met Stewart, a fledgling accountant, at a dance in the Y’s former Highfield Street locale. A romance sparked and the couple married in Sussex before moving to Bathurst and later Saint John.“I joined the Moncton Y when we came here in ’62 and have been involved ever since,” jokes Stewart.

Betty joined then, too, eventually teaching tots to swim and advising at Hi-Y, a club for students. The couple’s three children were also active in the YMCA.

Along with other local endeavours, Betty and Stewart have served on the Y’s Board of Directors, each holding terms as Chair. (In this photo, they hold images taken when they served.) Stewart was also an original member of the Y Foundation.

The retired couple now meet regularly with former Y staff and other ‘alumni’ to stay in touch and lend a hand.

“I love the Y because it’s all about friendliness and caring,” says Betty. Stewart agrees. “Volunteering here is being involved in your community and it’s really appreciated.”
