Pierre Bolduc says he was always “a big boy”.

When he moved from Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska, N.B., to Moncton in 2006, he tipped the scales at over 300 pounds, smoked, and had high blood pressure.

“My doctor said I had a 400% chance of having a heart attack or other cardiac problem,” says Pierre, who works as a civil servant in Moncton. “I knew I had to do something.”

In 2009, he joined the YMCA of Greater Moncton on a mission to improve his health.

With the support of motivating Y staff, Pierre dropped 75 pounds over nine months, working out on a variety of exercise equipment such as the elliptical and recumbent bike. A few months later, he stopped smoking.

“Now I have a balance,” he says. “I no longer need blood pressure pills. I feel great physically and mentally. I can run around after my two daughters. I made the changes for myself and my girlfriend, but also for my kids, so we can be active together.”

Today, Pierre and his family enjoy a Family Membership at the Y and continue on a healthy path.

“Thanks to the Y, being active is now part of our lifestyle.”
