(Moncton, March 27, 2019) – The ‘Air Trivia Controllers’ took home the 2019 Battle of the Brains championship title Saturday.
The YMCA of Greater Moncton hosted the 18th annual Battle of the Brains trivia challenge in support of its ReConnect Street Intervention Program, which helps individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk. While the exact tally is still being finalized, close to $15,000 was raised Saturday, with more than $185,000 collected in total since the event began in 2002.
“Several teams jockeyed for first place down to the wire Saturday but the Air Trivia Controllers came out on top by one point over NBCC’s Team Community Knowledge,” says event organizer Cathy Manuel. “The competition was exciting but even more impressive was the incredible spirit of giving shown for this important cause. I’d like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who played a role in making the event a success, from our amazing teams and our terrific sponsors to our tireless volunteers. Thank you!”
Emceed by New Country 96.9 FM’s Scotty Horsman, this year’s Battle of the Brains saw 23 teams made up of four to six participants compete for bragging rights and a coveted, wrestling-style championship belt.
The winning Air Trivia Controllers from Nav Canada consisted of Mike Oxner, Derek Dakin, Shawn Meikle, Shawn Murphy, Hector MacIntyre and Stephen Baker. The team unseated the previous champs, ‘The Resurgonauts’ from the City of Moncton’s Resurgo Place.
During the 10-round Battle of the Brains competition Saturday, teams collectively answered questions on a wide range of topics from pop culture to grammar. Each team's performance was scored by a panel of judges that included YMCA Foundation Board members Alan MacLellan and Alan Mongraw, New Country 96.9 FM’s Tony Smith and Shilo Bellis, and volunteers Gina Bellis and Phyllis Bannister.
Employees from area businesses as well as groups of friends and neighbours made up teams at the event. Among the corporate groups were those from IGT, Tangerine, the City of Moncton, Asurion, Pepsi, NBCC, New Country 96.9 FM, C103, Bingham Law, Nav Canada, Probation Services, Deloitte, Moneris and 3+ Corporation/Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce.
Non-corporate teams included the Academic Assassins and Team Cerebrum. Staff from YMCA ReConnect also participated in a team.
Event presenters and lead sponsors included New Country 96.9 FM, C103 and Cheers Catering. Other sponsors included Pepsi, Bob Lee Productions, Cremerie Bennic Dairy Bar, Red Lama Media, Sonic Image Audio Visual, Daniel St. Louis Commercial Photography, Chateau Moncton, Dooly’s (Mountain Road and Elmwood Drive locations), Inspiration Design and Sobeys Vaughan Harvey.
